1. What are the qualifications for admission to PTFE's graduate program?
We accept students with B.S. or M.S. degree in one of the following disciplines: Polymer Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Textile Engineering, Chemistry, Physics, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, and Biomedical Engineering. GPA of 3.0 or above is desirable and most students accepted in the program have significantly higher GPA. The Admission Committee also considers factors such as class rank, research experience, recommendations, and GRE scores.

2. Is the GRE exam mandatory?
The general portion of the GRE exam is required for admission. The GRE must be taken in the past five years prior to admission. Applicants from China, Korea, and Taiwan must have taken the GRE after November 2002.

3. Are there any additional requirements for international students?
In addition to the GRE requirement, international students must have a minimum TOEFL score of 213 on the computer test or 550 on the written test.

4. May I submit photocopies of GRE and TOEFL scores?
Photocopies of GRE and TOEFL scores can be used until official scores are received from the Educational Testing Service.

5. Can you give me an idea of my chance for acceptance?
We cannot provide preliminary evaluations. The Admissions Committee carefully studies the entire application before reaching a decision.

6. I am interested in working for a specific faculty member. Should I send my application directly to him/her?
Applications must be sent to the School and not a specific faculty member. Decisions regarding admissions are made by an Admissions Committee and are based on many factors. We encourage admitted students to contact several PTFE faculty members to begin the process of choosing an advisor. All students must select an advisor within the first few weeks of the first semester.

7. I can only attend graduate school if I receive financial aid during my studies. Is aid available?
Financial aid in the form of graduate assistantships is available to qualified students who are admitted to our graduate program. The assistantships cover tuition and provide a competitive stipend. We encourage students to also seek outside fellowships (from the NSF, etc.) to help finance their graduate studies.

8. When will the decision be made on my application?
Most of our students are admitted for the fall semester, which begins in mid-August. Most decisions for fall admission will be made in March or April. To view an academic calendar, visit http://www.registrar.gatech.edu.

9. Is it possible to take courses on a part-time basis?
Most required courses are offered during the day and generally meet 2-3 times per week. It is possible to take these courses and conduct research on a part-time basis. In order to qualify for financial assistance, students must be registered as full-time students.

10. I cannot afford to pay the application fee. Can I defer the fee until I am admitted?
Although we understand the financial difficulties associated with applications, the $50 application fee cannot be deferred or waived.

This number fluctuates greatly from year to year depending on the amount of financial assistance available.

12. Is my application complete?
Due to the amount of applications we receive each year it is difficult to answer this question immediately. Using the online application system, applicants can check their status. E-mail further questions to grad-program@ptfe.gatech.edu

13. What courses are offered and when?
To view the classes offered each semester, visit http://oscar.gatech.edu/. Most courses are offered during the same semester each year, i.e., classes offered in fall 2004 will generally be offered in fall 2005.
