Title:  The Role of Computational Modeling in the Materials Development for Aerospace Products and Systems

Abstract:  Materials technology has played an important role in the development and capabilities of aerospace products and systems. The need for higher fuel efficiency, lower cost, environment friendly and more capable aircrafts have given rise to significant materials demands.  The rate of improvement and application of new products and systems can be limited by the rate of new materials and process technology development and qualification.  As materials are being developed for unique requirements and even location-specific unique properties, the computational modeling tools and methods to enable rapid validation of material definitions and design systems must also be advanced to support the required material development and insertion rate.  A review of traditional materials development processes and emerging computational modeling tools and methods that are allowing increased rate of development, validation and qualification of new materials will be presented. The role of computational modeling in the development of new materials including advanced aluminum and nickel based superalloys will be discussed. The potential future role of materials engineering in component design will also be discussed.
